CORTLAND, N. Manchester City Jersey Cheap .Y. -- Geno Smith threw one interception, and then another. And then, two more. It wasnt a good performance by the New York Jets rookie quarterback. At all. "It was brutal," coach Rex Ryan said flatly on Wednesday. "That was Genos worst day." Smith, competing with Mark Sanchez for the starting job, was intercepted four times, including three in 11-on-11 team drills. He is still dealing with a sprained right ankle, that he has looked less hobbled by in practice the last few days. But Ryan said it is clearly affecting his performance, as well as his fundamentals and being late on some throws. "Obviously, the ankle is part of it, but way too many picks," Ryan said. "He did not look comfortable today. Obviously, he has to come back from it, and he will come back from it. But it was a bad day." "Guys have bad days, but this was a really bad day." It was also an unseasonably cold day in Cortland -- the temperature at the start of practice was a mere 52 degrees with occasional rain. "It was a beautiful December day today," Ryan quipped. "That, without question, had to be the coldest training camp day Ive ever been a part of. Thats about 30 years. "Man, that was chilly. Almost as chilly as the offensive performance today." And that included Smiths performance. The second-round pick, however, insisted the ankle has not been a factor. "I havent really been trying to use it as an excuse," he said. "Ive been going out there and giving it my all, and I think Ive done a good job of just pushing through this week." Ryan agreed that Smith hasnt been using the injury an excuse for his performances lately, but added that its "bravado" by the quarterback saying its not affecting him. "Guys, you see it out there," Ryan said. "Hes not able to move like he normally does. Hes not able to drive the ball like he normally does with his velocity. That doesnt mean he still cant get out there. Hes competing. Hes been out there every day. "But is he 100 per cent? I would say that hes not 100 per cent." The Jets have still not decided on a starter for the teams preseason game Saturday night against Jacksonville, but Sanchez has outperformed Smith this week. When asked if he wants to start Saturday, Smith curiously said: "No comment." Ryan acknowledged that its a "possibility" Smith wont play against the Jaguars, but added that theres still plenty of time for the injury to heal. Smith, meanwhile, remained positive about his camp so far -- as well as the injury. "The ankles feeling good," Smith said. "Its getting progressively better." Smith was injured in the teams preseason opener at Detroit last Friday night, but has not missed any practice time. He worked mostly with the first-team offence Wednesday, and appeared to move around the field with only a slight limp at times. With both quarterbacks facing the scout-team defences as the Jets prepare for Jacksonville, Smith was not sharp. He was intercepted by Rontez Miles on a pass that went off the hands of Ryan Spadola in 7-on-7 drills, and also picked off by Royce Adams, Jacquies Smith and Bret Lockett in 11-on-11 drills. "It was a bad day today," Ryan said. "Theres no other way to put it. It was a bad day. Was I disappointed he had the day he did today? Absolutely. These days happen, but you dont expect them to happen." When asked what happened on the interceptions, Smith got slightly testy. "I dont know," he said. "Youve got to watch the tape man, Im pretty sure you all got it. Just go ahead and watch it." Ryan indicated that he and his staff need to see more of both Smith and Sanchez before they consider who will win the competition and start in Week 1 against Tampa Bay. "Will it become more of a sense of urgency probably after this game? I would say so," Ryan said. "I thought this was going to be a real competition and it wouldnt be just solved after one week of a preseason game. I dont know that many are really decided after one preseason game. So I dont think its a surprise that theres not clarity at a number of positions." NOTES: RB-KR Joe McKnight (head injury) missed practice for a second straight day after needing to be carted off the field and needing oxygen Monday. After slipping from the summit during the week, the Gunners overcame struggling Crystal Palace 2-0 on Sunday thanks to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlains second-half brace. DENVER -- The St. Louis Cardinals will send rookie Luke Weaver to the mound as they try to sweep their three-game series Wednesday against the Colorado Rockies.Weaver, 23, is 1/3 with a 3.21 ERA in seven starts, the last on Friday at San Francisco, where he gave up five hits and six unearned runs in 2 2/3 innings and lost 8-2.Weaver, who made his major league debut Aug. 13, will be pitching for the first time at Coors Field. Cardinals manager Mike Matheny emphatically said he would not talk to Weaver about the mile-high altitude, the spacious outfield or anything that might be lurking at hitter-friendly Coors Field.Im not going to fill his mind, and Im going to discourage anybody else from doing the same thing, Matheny said. Just go do your thing, and well make adjustments as we need to and well try to keep an eye (out for) when something doesnt look right. But to kind of pre-set in his mind that hes going to have to do something different, I think, is a bad strategy. The Cardinals have won four straight games and are tied with the New York Mets and San Francisco Giants in the race for the two National League wild-card spots. The Cardinals spurt has made the scoreboard watching more riveting and, at Coors Field, more unavoidable. From where my angle is (in the dugout) and where the pitchers head is, right behind it is the scoreboard, Matheny said, referring to the out-of-town scoreboard in right field. I mean directly behind it, so you cant help but watch and to see whats going on with the other teams. That said, after Tuesday nights 10-5 win over the Rockies, Matheny repeated the Cardinals mantra when it comes to scoreboard watching. Its not something we run from. Its just not something we put too much focus on, Matheny said. Control what we can control. Same boring stuff, but it keeps it very simple what our job description is.Like the Cardinals, the Rockies are also starting a rookie in German Marquez, 21. He made his major league debut Sept. 8 and will be making his first major leaague start after three relief appearances. David Silva Jersey. Hes 0-3 with a 5.06 ERA in those three games, the last two scoreless for a combined three innings.Im very excited Im going to be a starter. Thats unbelievable, Marquez said. I want to help my team, too. Thats why Im here. Im going to do it.The Rockies acquired Marquez from Tampa Bay along with reliever Jake McGee in the Jan. 28 trade that sent outfielder Corey Dickerson and minor league third baseman Kevin Padlo to the Rays. Marquez said he was surprised to be traded, since the Rays had placed him on their 40-man roster for the first time two months before the deal.Marquez was named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Year after going 9-6 with a 2.85 ERA, 33 walks and 126 strikeouts in 135 2/3 innings for Double-A Hartford. He then went 2-0 with a 4.35 ERA in five starts for Triple-A Albuquerque before being recalled by the Rockies.Marquezs repertoire includes a fastball, curveball and changeup. The first two pitches are above average and the third will be. Marquezs changeup was a point of emphasis this season, specifically to not slow his arm speed and keep it the same as his fastball while throwing his changeup. The thing that jumps out at you is its easy velocity -- upper 90s, Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. Theres not a lot of effort. Hes got great finish (on the fastball). Hes got a good breaking ball. The changeup is a work in progress right now, but its coming. But for a 21-year-old kid -- very, very impressive. In addition to his stuff, Marquez has impressed the Rockies with his mound presence. We saw that right away in spring training, unaffected by the major league atmosphere, Weiss said. Always looked like he belonged. It says something for a kid his age, (coming to) a new organization, too. Thats not easy. The few outings hes had here the last few weeks, same thing. Very composed.
